Trigger Warning: The following story contains themes of child sexual abuse that might be disturbing for readers.

A woman shot her husband after he allegedly molested kids at the daycare she owns. Shanteari Weems shot her husband James Weems, Jr., a retired Baltimore police officer inside their room at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. A statement from the D.C. Metropolitan Police said that "upon arrival, members located an adult male, inside of a hotel room, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. The suspect was arrested by responding officers. The detectives’ investigation revealed that this offense was domestic in nature."

The 50-year-old Maryland woman is being held in the D.C. jail, charged with assault with intent to kill her husband and several handgun offenses, reports The Washington Post. Her husband suffered two gunshot wounds that are not considered life-threatening and continue to receive treatment at the hospital. The 57-year-old former cop retired in 2005 but continued working for the department as a contract specialist until 2008. He has been charged with 13 sex crimes related to the abuse of “at least three children.” He is accused of “sexually abusing at least three children while working at a daycare facility,” Baltimore County Police said Tuesday. The department said he is charged with three counts each of sexual abuse involving a minor, third-degree sexual offense, second-degree assault and fourth-degree sexual offense. James also faces a charge of displaying obscene material to a minor.

Shanteari confronted her husband in the hotel room about the sexual abuse allegations made against him by the parents of three children who attend her Lil' Kidz Kastle Daycare Center in Owings Mills, according to court documents obtained by WMAR. The conversation escalated to a point where Shanteari allegedly grabbed a gun from her purse and shot her husband. The Baltimore Sun reports that police discovered a notebook in the hotel room with handwritten messages, including “I’m going to shoot” him “but not kill him” and “I want these kids to get justice.”

One of her attorneys, Joseph Fay, said, he is “looking forward to providing Ms. Weems with a vigorous defense.” Co-counsel Tony Garcia added that their client has “never harmed a person in her life” and in fact “dedicated herself to other people’s children so that they can make a living.” He also mentioned, “I think that this woman here was torn apart by guilt—that this was her very own husband—and by fear when he attacked her,” Garcia said. “She’s just in this swamp of fear and guilt at this moment. It was very clear that she did not want him to molest another child. Not on her watch.”
