Mike Hagerty, 'Friends' Mr. Treeger, Has Died At Age 67: 'He Will Be Sorely Missed'

A cause of the character actor's death has not been disclosed.

Mike Hagerty, the character actor perhaps best known for his recurring role as the building superintendent Mr. Treeger on Friends, has died at the age of 67. A cause of death has not been revealed. The beloved character actor had more than 100 acting credits. More recently he starred opposite Bridget Everett as her character Sam's father, farmer Ed Miller, in the HBO comedy series Somebody, Somewhere.

On Friday, Everett announced the news of his death in a post shared on Instagram. "A beloved character actor, his love of his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life," she wrote. Everett, 50, called Hagerty "a devoted husband" and shared that he "is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, his sister Mary Ann Hagerty, her wife Kathleen O'Rourke, and their daughter Meg." "He will be sorely missed," his costar added. In another post, she mentioned: I loved Mike the instant i met him. He was so special. Warm, funny, never met a stranger. We are devastated he has passed. Mike was adored by the entire cast and crew of Somebody Somewhere. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.

Hagerty is remembered by Friends fans as Mr. Treeger on the 1990s NBC comedy series. In season 4, the character had a memorable role where Matt LaBlanc's Joey agrees to be his dance partner after he threatens to evict Courteney Cox's Monica and Jennifer Aniston's Rachel. The actor with his mustache and thick Chicagoan accent often played blue-collar roles. According to Cinema Blend, he also holds the honor of being the last character mentioned in the series! In the finale, Monica tells Matthew Perry's Chandler in Season 10's "The Last One," “I almost forgot — I promised Treeger that we’d leave our key.” The scene is pretty funny because the others in the group reveal that they've all had a spare key to Monica's apartment all these years.

Over the course of Haggerty's career, he has appeared in many television series, including, Boston Legal, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Cheers, Community, CSI, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, ER, Ghost Whisperer, Glee, The Goldbergs, Grey's Anatomy, Happy Endings, Medium, The Mindy Project, Mob City, Monk, Seinfeld, Shameless, and The Wayans Bros. Hagerty also appeared in a number of films from 1983 to 2020, including Brewster’s Millions, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Inspector Gadget, Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, and Thin Ice. He was also a recurring character on Lucky Louie.

RIP Mike Hagerty.
