Mama June Supports 16-Yr-Old Daughter "Honey Boo Boo" Dating A 20-Year-Old: She's 'Grown Up'

Thompson has been with Dralin Carswell for a over a year but came under heavy criticism for dating the 20-year-old.

Mama June Shannon defends 16-year-old daughter Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson's relationship with a 20-year-old. Shannon said most people were hating on her daughter because they grew up watching her as a child. The 42-year-old said her daughter had every right to love the person she wants to after it came to light that Thompson was dating Dralin Carswell. "Yes, I've met Dralin. They've been together for over a year," Shannon told TooFab. "People need to realize that she's going to be 17 in August and that [Alana's older sister] Pumpkin and Josh were the same age as they were," she added. The pair have been together for more than a year.

"She is getting a lot of hate because she's in an interracial relationship, he is older," said the "Mama June: Road to Redemption" star. "But at the end of the day, Alana's not that 6-, 7-year-old child y'all fell in love with 11 years ago. Alana has grown up, she's graduating high school next year, guys!" While Shannon has no problem with them dating, she's hoping to see him earn a living. "He's good. He needs to hold down a job a little bit more," Shannon said. "I mean, he's not bad. He doesn't treat her bad or anything like that." Shannon isn't too concerned about how long they will be together, she understands it's up to them. "They're [young] and they've been together over a year. So, if they last? Fine. If they don't, it can be her first love," she said.

Thompson revealed she was dating Carswell on Instagram in September but deleted the photo after many criticized their relationship. Shannon added that she's trying to rebuild her relationship with Thompson, which will be shown on their show "Road to Redemption." Shannon currently lives with her older daughter, Lauryn "Pumpkin" Shannon. "Our relationship is going good. You'll see that throughout the season," she shared. "She is turning 17 in August. So that's the thing, she is graduating next year. A lot of people still look at her as that 6-year-old little girl, but she's [grown up]."

Thompson herself has spoken out about people seeing her as a kid. "I feel like so many people still look at me as that little girl that very first came on TV," she said. "Even when the posts about me and my boyfriend coming out, I feel like there was so many people that were still treating me like I was 6 years old." Alana Thompson has a mixed relationship with her mother. A few years ago, she was heavily criticized for apparently mimicking her Mom doing drugs. She appeared to be pretending to snort cocaine. Mama June had been arrested on allegations of crack possession. Her boyfriend, Geno Doak, had also been arrested and charged with third-degree domestic violence, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Alana Thompson went to see professional medic Dr. Ish and broke down. She said, "I’ve been holding everything in because I don’t know who to talk to. I don’t know what to do. Everything has been so stressful lately. I don’t have my mom." She was being taken care of by Pumpkin and Josh in the absence of her mom. While Alana was staying with Lauryn 'Pumpkin' Shannon and her husband Josh Efird, they were evicted from their home in Georgia for failing to pay the rent.

Alana Thompson is more popular because she had her own reality series — TLC's "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" which ran from 2012 to 2013. She also appeared on TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras.

"Mama June: Road to Redemption" airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on WE tv.
