Klondike Officially Discontinues Choco Taco After Nearly 4 Decades On The Market

Choco Taco was discontinued due to an unprecedented spike in demand for different Klondike products over the past two years, a representative confirmed.

The beloved ice cream, Klondike's Choco Taco has officially been discontinued after remaining an iconic dessert treat for people for nearly four decades.

According to PEOPLE, a representative of Klondike which is owned by Unilever, confirmed that the forever-in-demand Choco Taco was discontinued due to an unprecedented spike in demand for different Klondike products over the past two years.

The Choco Taco was available to buy through ice cream trucks after it was first developed in the 1980s. It is a frozen treat featuring a taco-shaped waffle cone filled with vanilla ice cream and is partially covered with milk chocolate and topped with peanuts. According to NPR, AlanDrazen, who invented the Choco Taco, saw it in a mirage while being stranded in Mexico.

The frozen dessert was even sold at Taco Bell for a period of time. In February, Taco Bell partnered with Klondike, bringing the Choco Taco back to 20 Taco Bell locations for a limited time as part of Klondike's 100-year anniversary.

"Unfortunately, the Choco Taco has been discontinued in both 1ct and 4ct packs," Klondike wrote on Twitter in response to a user asking for confirmation of the news.

"Over the past 2 years, we have experienced an unprecedented spike in demand across our portfolio and have had to make very tough decisions to ensure availability of our full portfolio nationwide," the company continued.

Internet users were devastated after the news that the popular summertime snack will not be available anymore started circulating online on Monday afternoon.

Replying to another user disappointed about the product being discontinued, Klondike urged customers to try their other treats. "A necessary but unfortunate part of this process is that we sometimes must discontinue products, even a beloved item like Choco Taco. We know this may be very disappointing, and hope you’ll try our other delicious frozen treats!" the company wrote.

In a response to another Twitter user, Klondike wrote, "We know Choco Taco is a huge fan favorite and a top seller for our out-of-home business, so this is particularly painful. We're working hard to find a way to bring Choco Taco back to ice cream trucks in the coming years."

However, other Twitter users wrote that they didn’t mind the decision of the ice cream be discontinued. “Choco-tacos were… bad. This makes room for Strawberry Shortcake options,” one person tweeted. Another person wrote, “Good. Choco taco was mid at best.” Another Twitter user wrote, “I’m glad the choco taco is gone, it wasn’t even good.”

“Next summer, the choco taco will make a triumphant though limited time return. Then it will be back in trucks and freezer sections a few months later. We’ve done this a hundred times. I’m so exhausted,” wrote another user who is doubtful about the discontinuation.
