The country legend celebrated her 90th birthday on April 14.
Crystal Gayle and her older sister, Loretta Lynn still share a special bond. Gayle was just nine years old when Lynn came out with her first record, I’m a Honky Tonk Girl in 1960. Gayle later followed in her big sister's footsteps and began her career in music in 1970. In fact, Lynn helped secure her sibling's first contract. "She gave me the best advice: 'Don't sing anything that I would because we're only going to be compared,'" Gayle recalled to PEOPLE last year. "She was right." The two singing sisters have collaborated many times over the years and each of them has their own sound. "We're sisters, so of course, we're going to have our words," she shared, "but it was never anything major. We'd laugh about it and go on with our careers."
The Queen of Country Music recently celebrated her 90th birthday on Thursday, April 14th. Sony Music Entertainment dedicated a blossoming magnolia tree to the icon. The tree can be found at the Frist Learning Center on the Cheekwood Estate & Gardens in Nashville. It now has a plaque that reads: "Loretta Lynn (b. April 14, 1932) / Coal Miner's Daughter / Music Icon / Celebrating Her 90th Birthday."
"For generations of fans, Loretta Lynn is the heart and soul of American country music, the woman who showed us the untapped possibilities of the genre through the genius and direct perspectives of her songs and the integrity of her performances," Richard Story, President, Commercial Music Group, SME, said in a statement. "Please join me and everyone in the Sony family in wishing Loretta the happiest of birthdays along with a deep appreciation for all the magic, truth and beauty she's shown us through her music over the years." The Coal Miner's Daughter singer is a Country Music Hall of Famer as well as a four-time Grammy winner. Lynn's famous friends also filmed special video messages for her on her big day. This included Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Carly Pearce, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Ashley McBryde, and Dolly Parton.
Lynn's sibling shared a rare photo of her sister that was not included in the video message in honor of her 90th birthday. In the throwback photo, Lynn is holding a guitar and looks stunning, not to mention incredibly young! Her sister tweeted: “Happy Birthday Loretta Lynn! You are a great sister! Love you…This is one of my favorite pictures.” Have you seen this one before?
